We’re here to help your child learn to tell the time with our time teaching watches. There comes a time in every child’s life when they’re ready to pick up those useful life skills that we, as adults, do without a second thought.

Teaching Time Intro

The importance of learning to tell the time

A child's first watch is a great opportunity to give them some independence and sneak in some basic mathematics at the same time! They’ll feel a new sense of connection to the world around them with this basic, but massively important, landmark skill.

What age do children learn to tell the time?

A great age to start your child on their time-telling journey is at around five or six. They may not be able to master concepts such as “o’clock” or am and pm until they’re closer to eight years old, but you can still lay the foundations and have them confidently telling the time in both 12-hour and 24-hour formats well before their tenth birthday.

How can I teach my child to tell the time?

While we’d love to tell you that teaching your child how to tell the time is as simple as buying them their first watch, you’ll still need to work with them to help them perfect the skill.

A great way to do this is to make sure that they can count all the way up to sixty and know their five times table. That should cover all the numbers they’ll need to pick up telling the time organically and they’ll be adept at counting in multiples of five. You should also start referring to the time in their day-to-day activities. For example, bedtime is at half past six or lunchtime is at one pm. Once the concept of time has significance in their everyday life, you’ve already done a lot of the work!

Why not include other fun and relaxing activities to help with learning to tell the time, like baking or sports and games? How far can they run in thirty seconds? If the cupcakes take forty minutes to bake in the oven, what time will they be ready? Who can set the time on their watch the quickest?

Which watch style is best for learning to tell the time?

We’d really recommend an analogue watch to begin with so that your child can learn how tell the time traditionally before they move on to digital. They really help build those basic mathematical skills and give a real-time understanding of how time passes.

The Thoughtful

Our most popular first watch to help children learn how to tell the time is The Thoughtful with its helpful learning aids and easily adjustable watch strap. To and past being clearly marked on the dial help immensely when teaching your child the to/past method of learning to tell the time. It’s really easy to get the watch on and off your child’s wrist and it comes in five great colours.

As an exercise get your child to look at their watch and do the following:
• Say the number at the end of the long hand
• What side is the long hand on? Do we say TO or PAST?
• Say the number at the end of the short hand?
• Now – let’s use this to say what time it is.

The Vibrant

The Vibrant with its small size and bright colours is a great choice for learning the 24-hour method of learning to tell the time. It has been designed for learning with its easy-to-read minute and hour numbers around the dial as well as minute intervals marked so children can learn how the spaces between numbers work.

As an exercise get your child to look at their watch and do the following:
• Say the number at the end of the short hand
• Say the number at the end of the long hand?
• Now – let’s use this to say what time it is.

How to choose the perfect time teaching watch?

Buying a first watch around or after a fifth birthday is usually a good time but this can be earlier or later depending on the child. A surprise watch can make a wonderful gift or you could get them involved and help them choose their perfect first watch. Child-friendly features are so important so look out for easy-to-read dials, bright or favourite colours and easily adjustable watch straps. Nylon straps can be particularly useful as they're easily cleaned. For a full breakdown of our watches for learning to tell the time, check out our buyer's guide.
